Sheils Writes

Just an 80's girl in a modern world!

  • but I like it too!

These Dr. Squatch soaps my son & husband use smell so good! Reminds me of the old, and very dated, Irish Spring ads from the 70s…”Manly, yes, (woman takes soap from man), but I like it too”.

These are hard to keep up on in our household, they are so good!  Clean scents, like Deep Sea Goats Milk, Cool Fresh Aloe & Fresh Falls are my personal favorites!

“Feel like a man, smell like a champ”

    So (ap) Good!
  • I can’t help myself lately with going back in time. My younger years. My olden days. I remember my parents always telling me how much they loved the 1950s. For me it’s the late 1970s/1980s.

Here is my “in between time” life lately. Work is obviously a major part of my life, but it’s the memories of what I would do with my “in between” time that keeps calling to me.

I’m happy I’ve been able to tap back into these days. They bring me comfort. I also regularly listen to a podcast that triggers all the memories of those days. Check out The Pop Culture Preservation Society wherever you listen to podcasts. They are great!

My toolkit of nostalgia keeps growing, thanks to several antique/thrift shops near my house. No judgment. This works for me to keep me happy. A feeling that doesn’t come in pill form prescribed by a doctor. I’m my own happiness doctor! This doctor is always in! I find these feelings in an 80s movie marathon, a Partridge Family album, a Grease sing along, my latch hook rug pillows and Nancy Drew mystery books!

My totally awesome journey continues! Need to find an old cassette player on my next thrift shop adventure and a few Madonna cassettes!!

Catch you on the flip side!

    My olden days
  • What’s the thing you’re most scared to do? What would it take to get you to do it?

I have the story. My grandpa already wrote it, and typed it. It’s his story and it’s literally history. I’m holding these 15 pages in my hands. His time in the US Army from 1944 to 1945, from Fort Dix to Europe and back.

I’m scared and I need the courage to put this out there. I think people would read it. I know some people may say bad things about it and that makes me nervous.

My grandpa isn’t here anymore for me to ask his permission so I debate whether or not I should share his story with the world.

I will keep thinking it over. I do think I will eventually do it. Not only do I have his typed pages, I have lots of photos that he took along his journey. This is museum worthy.

I’ll see what happens. It could also be made into a docuseries.

  • What books do you want to read?

I want to read these books (pictured below)…these are my books I’ve collected since 2004 when I first started a “hobby” of going to book signings. I have many first edition signed books that I still haven’t gotten around to reading. I would always say someday I’m going to move to Florida and will sit on my front porch and read my signed books. I moved to Florida in March of 2023, however I must work full time at least 10 more years, but when I do eventually retire, my books are waiting for me, right here on these shelves.

  • Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

Sheila, circa 1914, means heavenly. I was named Sheila Jeanne by my Mom & Dad in 1965.

Famous uses of Sheila…a movie from 1973, “The Last of SHEILA” stars Raquel Welch & Dyan Cannon (a classic!), a song “Oh Sheila” from 1985 by Ready for the World, another song (Hey Little) “Sheila” by Tommy Roe, 1962, another song “Sheila Take A Bow” by The Smiths, 1987.

Sheila is what girls are called in Australia.

Sheila E is a famous Sheila who is an American singer & drummer. Her famous hit, “The Glamorous Life” came out in 1984.

My Dad would call me Sheila bird! Now I go by Sheils, Sheil, Sheila & Sheila D.

I do not know many Sheila’s but when I meet one we instantly connect on our rarely used, but unique first name, and sing a little “oh, oh Sheila”.

  • What makes a good leader?

I’m here for the fun! I tried to think seriously about this and lately I’m at a loss about leaders. Let’s just not go to the political side of this question. Let’s not. However, you want to talk lead singers? Let’s do it! Freddie, Axl, David Lee Roth, Joan Jett, hell Taylor Swift y’all for her talent, her outfits & her shoes! Duh! Seriously, these leaders know how to bring it! Let’s get this party started! TGIF my friends! Party like a rock star!

  • In what ways do you communicate online?

It’s here to stay, whether I like it or not. In the beginning, online communication seemed good. Fun even. In touch with old friends, family through Facebook mostly.

Fast forward 15 years and I am in the ultimate of love/hate relationships with this form of communication. I’m an introvert at heart. Bring back my landline, answering machine & busy signal.

However, I like to write, hence my WordPress blog. I’ve recently backed away from Facebook and just use the Messenger feature of it from time to time. I removed the app from my phone. I am more in control. I’m no longer posting where I am, the moment I’m there on my news feeds. It became addicting but served an odd purpose. It just doesn’t appeal to me lately. I prefer a bit more privacy now.

Instagram is a nice platform. I enjoy sharing photos as a way of online communicating and I can share my WordPress blogs through the “story” feature. X (formerly Twitter) I use to share my posts & keep up on a few of my favorite celebs.

For now, those are my forms of online communication, and when I’ve had enough, I make the call. Unplug. Disconnect. Read a book.

  • Think back on your most memorable road trip.

I’ve traveled many times by car from Connecticut to Florida over the years due to family living between the 2 states. While most of these trips were “straight through” due to never having real time to do them slowly, my most memorable was my last one from Connecticut to Florida to move here permanently. What made this most memorable was having my cat along for the ride this time!

She did great & in the photo below she was enjoying the sunrise as she entered the sunshine state!

    Sammi!
  • Oh, hey now @ thejulieroberts here’s a flashback Friday for you!

Coming up on 20 years of your release of your self titled CD & one of my all-time favorite songs “Break Down Here”!

I believe this snapshot of us might be from the 2006 time frame when you were touring for your other CD, Men & Mascara, but thought it’d be fun to share this on here and do a little tag, post, shout out!

Hope to catch you in 2024 and we can retake this pic 20 years later!

    Flashback Friday!
  • What snack would you eat right now?

Hands down! My mom will be 90 tomorrow. I visited her last weekend and she saved me a few of her only batch of Christmas cookies she made last Christmas! I ate them all so fast! I would eat them again in a heartbeat. It’s that darn extra special ingredient, ‘love’, that is in them! Gets me every time!
